Crated Habgoblin – Live!
DISCLAIMER: This is still a work in Progress
You may have seen my Habgoblin Label Graphic Design work, but this is also for the same company (it’s my company, surprise surprise.)
I’ve been fascinated with Disney Imagineering’s ability to take their characters and make them exist in the real world. I wanted to do the very same with my Habgoblin character and make it appear to our fans as though ‘they exist, and we caught one‘.
After some testing of different methods, a simple ‘Peppers Ghost’ illusion setup became my preferred method to try and conjure the spectacle, but taking this project from the screen to the real world has been a slow bottleneck of time, funding and experimentation, and it’s still been incredibly exciting!
The Making Of…

Behind the scenes, I first needed to imagine the 2d logo as a 3d object.
I created a quick maquette out of Sculpy and tin foil, and photographed it from a bunch of angles to help start off the 3d modeling process. I commissioned, ‘David Alarcon 3d‘ to help me with the modeling, texturing and blendshapes, and with some iteration, he was fully realized.

Now he just needed some “bones”. Kelsie Groth was excited to help me explore the cartoony squash & stretch I was after with this character, and soon enough he was flying.
